Fact, coffee was first planted in the
Hawaiian islands in the early 1800's
with cuttings
taken from coffee trees in South America.
The volcanic soil, abundant sunshine,
and afternoon rainfall make the Kona
Coffee Belt one of the premier
coffee growing regions in the world.
Hawaii is the only place in the United
States where coffee is grown. The Kona
coffee growing region is limited to the
leeward slopes of the volcanoes of Hualalai
and Mauna Loa, making it a truly exclusive
American product.
Visitors to the island of Hawaii often
wonder why it appears to be cloudy in
the Kona area in the afternoon. The locals
refer to this as "VOG," or
volcanic fog, a phenomenon associated
with the ongoing volcanic activity at
the southern tip of the island. The VOG
often makes for cooler afternoons in
the Kona Coffee belt, providing natural
shading for our Kona coffee trees.
